FERMENTED STINKY BEANCURDS @ MINI STAR

Mini Star 星仔 Fermented Beancurd is located at 795 Geylang Road, (near Geylang lorong 41). It serves many Hong Kong delicacies such as fermented stinky beancurd 臭豆腐, little cart noodles 车仔面, deep-fried smelt 煎多春鱼, deep-fried pig intestines 煎大肠 and so on.

The first type of fermented beancurd on the menu was the thicker and "stinkiest" version. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Very delicious!

The second type was the thinner and drier version. Not as stinky as the first type. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Yummy. I prefer the previous ones though. The stinky beancurds were served with the sweet sauce, chilli sauce and pickled vegetables.

The deep-fried dumplings were very crispy and tasty. I could eat big pieces of prawns inside the dumplings. The deep-fried prawns were rather average though. Nothing to shout about.

The deep-fried pig intestines were well marinated, crispy on the outside, springy on the inside. Yummy! The stir-fried pak choy with oyster sauce was quite disappointing.

LAKSA YONG TAU FOO NOODLE @ XI XIANG FENG

Xi Xiang Feng 喜相逢 stall is located at Blk 724 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 (Central) Hawker Centre #01-23. There was a very long queue when I reached there. The stall has a wide variety of yong tau foo ingredients to choose from. Customers have to select their food items and state their preferences (types of noodles/dry/soup/laksa gravy) before joining the queue. I had to wait 25 minutes for my laksa yong tau foo noodle.

It was worth the wait. The laksa gravy was thick and spicy. Very tasty and not too oily. The noodle was well-cooked, not soggy. The yong tau foo ingredients (including "hum" [cockles]) were fresh and delicious. The big bowl (9 ingredients) cost me $5, really value for money.

DINNER @ BEDOK SOUTH HAWKER CENTRE

This hawker centre (Bedok South Block 16) is well known for its many stalls of delicious local food. My friends and I decided to have our dinner there and ordered 3 dishes to share. First on the menu was fried hokkien prawn mee from Niu Ji 勿洛南 (牛记) 虾面 (stall #01-199). The dish was very delicious. It was the dry version, just what I like. The yellow noodles and vermicelli were not too soggy. Prawns, squid and small slices of pork skin were added. After mixing the dish with chilli (sambal belacan) and lime juice...ahhh yummy!!!

Next was the cuttlefish kang kong (water spinach) from Wah Kee Cooked Food 华记鱿鱼蕹菜 (stall #01-193). There was a fairly long queue when I reached the stall. The dish was really good. I believe the special mixed sauce made it unique and tasty. Other than the fresh cuttlefish and kankong, sliced tau pok (deep-fried beancurd), sliced pineapples, sliced mangoes, sliced cucumbers, bean sprouts and grinded peanuts were really good.

Our last order was fishball soup from Hock Seng Choon Fish Ball Kway Teow Mee 福成春鱼圆果条面 (stall #01-211). Long queue at the stall as usual. The fish balls were nice and springy. I will try its famous dry noodles next time.

MUTTON BIRYANI @ SRI KAMALA VILAS

This kopitiam-style Indian eatery is located next to the Tekka Food Centre (now under renovation). At $6.50, the biryani portion was huge, with delicious and tender mutton, 5 pieces of papadum (Indian crackers) and some vegetable salad. Really value for money. I must try the dosai and masala chicken next time. Service was average.
