My secondary school classmate Clement Ng owns Eden Sanctuary (www.edensanctuary.com.sg), a restaurant serving fresh, original and delicious food creations. Clement is well-known for his experiments with flowers and herbs in his cooking and his creations have delighted the palates of his customers. The restaurant has a serene and cosy setting which enhances the overall dining experience.
Through Clement's recommendation, I ordered the ginger leek peanut butter fish as the main course. The dish was superbly delicious and non-spicy. The fish was well marinated and fried to perfection. The ginger and leek were the dominant flavours, and the peanut butter was mild. Clement suggested that the main course had to be matched with a good white wine and he recommended Morande Pionero Sauvignon Blanc 2007 from Chile. One of the best white wines I ever tasted and certainly went well with the fish dish. Last but not least, I was served with the dessert modena mousse cake. Heavenly!
Service was very warm and friendly. It was like having a nice meal at a good friend's house.

Hill Street Char Kway Teow 禧街炒粿条 stall is located at Bedok South Blk 16 Hawker Centre #01-187. I was lucky my plate of char kway teow was fried by the elderly uncle Mr Ng. He has been selling this delicacy for decades and his knowledgeable control of fire and timing make his cooking famous.
The char kway teow was really good and not too oily. The beansprouts were crunchy and the hum (cockles) were cooked just right. Too bad this time there were no bits of crispy pork lard. To me, this is probably the best char kway teow in Singapore.

This was a surprise find when I was looking for a place for lunch and craving for laksa. Lok Lok Eating House is a kopitiam located at Blk 18 Jalan Membina (oppsite Tiong Bahru Plaza). The stall Lao Jiang 老江 sells both laksa and bah chor mee (minced pork noodles).
The laksa was served in a porcelein bowl, with the chilli and laksa leaves on the spoon. The laksa consisted of gravy, yellow noodles, sliced fishcakes, sliced tau pok (deep-fried beancurd) and hum (cockles). When mixed with the chilli and laksa leaves, the gravy was so yummy - spicy, rich and aromatic. It was not too salty and oily. The yellow noodles were well-cooked, not too soggy. The fishcakes, tau pok and hum were fresh and tasty.

This restaurant is located at Tampine One Shopping Mall basement one. My nephew Sherman and I wanted to have some non-Singapore food for a change. We were greeted courteously by the female service staff upon arrival. We ordered 2 main dishes – shredded pork with fried egg rice and cheese baked assorted mushrooms, plus iced milk tea.
The shredded pork with fried egg rice was a wonderful dish. The rice was well-cooked and aromatic. The shredded pork was crispy and delicious, with the right sweetness. When the rice was eaten with the fried egg, chinese mushrooms and corn...hmmm...yummy!
The cheese baked assorted mushrooms was under the "Cheese Baked Fresh Vege" series, which included assorted mushrooms, cheese and white sauce. The nicely-cooked mushrooms tasted okay, but there was too little cheese (I ordered double cheese) and overall too watery. A unique dish but it just did not appeal to me.
I simply love the Hong Kong-style iced milk tea. Concentrated and milky, just right in sweetness. It is the best I have drank so far in Singapore.

Ban Chuan Cooked Food 万全熟食摊 stall is located at Blk 724 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 (Central) Hawker Centre #01-19. It is popular for its braised duck rice, braised duck noodles and kway chap. I ordered a plate of braised duck rice (with an extra bowl of rice), with stewed eggs and braised pig's skin. The order came with braised peanuts and a bowl of duck herbal soup.
The brown rice (cooked with yam and dried shrimps) was well-cooked and added with the thick flavourful gravy. The braised duck meat was boneless and quite tender. It was delicious when eaten with the brown rice with gravy. The stewed eggs, braised pig's skin and duck herbal soup were good too. The chilli sauce was okay and had an interesting mixture of thin tart sauce and thick chilli paste.
